Easy DIY Toothpaste With Essential Oils
**I am reviving this old post because I’ve tweaked it and made it better and wanted to share. 😊 Let me know how you like it!!
All right, folks! I'm loving the homemade toothpaste business. I have really missed it these last few months. I ran out right before moving and decided not to make anymore until we were settled. We are settled and I'm back in business!
I’m so excited to share this recipe with you. Thanks to essential oils it is super duper easy and quick to throw together.
So without further ado.
Oh wait. I have a further ado.
Ado: Before starting remember not to use any metal or plastic bowls. Bentonite clay pulls and absorbs metals and toxins out of your body, so you don't want it absorbing metal or toxins from your spoon or bowl into itself and having that be in your toothpaste. Wooden spoons and glass bowls work great. Sometimes I do cheat and very quickly and briefly use a metal whisk if the toothpaste isn’t mixing together very well.
Why make your own toothpaste
Yea, weird, right? To make your own toothpaste? I mean, who in their right mind would do that when it’s so easy to grab a tube from the store!!
Well, like many things, the items on store shelves are not always what they are cracked up to be. Most toothpastes contain at least several ingredients that are not ideal for a healthy body.
Take fluoride for instance. According to an article written on the Weston A. Price Foundation:
The truth, now becoming increasingly evident, is that fluoridation and the proclaimed benefit of fluoride as a way of preventing dental decay is perhaps the greatest “scientific” fraud ever perpetrated upon an unsuspecting public.
You can read the full article here.
So yea. That’s why I make my own toothpaste.
Why I don’t use coconut oil
You will notice in many popular toothpaste recipes that coconut oil is used. I cannot get behind the whole coconut oil in my toothpaste fad because spitting a hard oil like coconut down the drain is very very bad. It can and will clog drains because it hardens once it hits 76 degrees. And frankly I find it disgusting and messy to spit my toothpaste into the trash can. Maybe I’m just uncoordinated. 🤣 I feel there are other healthy options for toothpaste, so I bring you my coconut oil free version!
Homemade Toothpaste With Essential Oils
Ingredients:
1/2 cup bentonite clay (balances pH, re-mineralizes)
1/4 cup powdered calcium carbonate (strengthens and builds enamel)
2 tablespoons baking soda (mild abrasive to remove plaque and mildly whitening)
1/2 teaspoon sea salt (antibacterial to kill bad bacteria)
6 drops clove essential oil (antiseptic & analgesic)
6 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil (antiseptic & antimicrobial)
30 drops peppermint essential oil (antiseptic, analgesic, deodorizing)
1/3 to 1/2 cup pure filtered water
Stevia powder (optional if you prefer a sweet toothpaste)
Directions:
In a small glass or ceramic bowl mix together the bentonite clay, calcium powder, baking soda, salt, and stevia if using.
Now you will add in your essential oils to the powder. Spread the drops around so they are not all in one clump. Mix them into the powder.
Starting with 1/3 cup of water, drizzle it over the powdered mixture and start to mix together. It takes a bit of muscle at first, so keep mixing until smooth. Add more water to create a toothpaste-like consistency. Sometimes it gets clumpy and I find it necessary to use a metal whisk. Try to be as quick in whisking as possible to the bentonite clay doesn’t react with the metal.
Once the paste is nice and smooth, scoop it into your container of choice. I found these awesome little silicone tubes that are washable and refillable. I’m in love with them!! This recipe fills about 2 tubes this size. And yes. It can be messy filling them. 🤣
Now go ahead and use your awesome homemade toothpaste!! Or be grossed out by the un-foaminess and weird gray color. HA! I never said homemade beauty products were perfect.
But seriously. Give it some time. I think you will learn to love it! It definitely took me some time, but now I miss it when I run out and don't make more right away. So here’s to those pearly whites that will thank you for not using nasty chemicals in your mouth.
A Note on essential oils
If you are using this for children, please cut the essential oil quantities down by about half. Kiddos are much more sensitive to oils and should not use the full adult dose.
Feel free to do your own research and switch up the essential oils to suit your own taste.
