Hydrating Lip Balm
So after playing around for several years with homemade lip balm, I have decided that this is by far my favorite recipe. It's easy, it's so soft on lips, it's highly nourishing, and it never fails.
If you are wanting to get into making your own body care products, but aren't sure where to start I would highly recommend right here. Lip balm is exceptionally easy and pretty much fail proof. It's a great way to "get your feet wet" in the world of concocting.
Let's get started. Oh but first, the measurements are by weight not by volume, which makes this recipe so much more accurate than making it by tablespoons and teaspoons. Having a little scale will be so handy!
Hydrating Lip Balm
Ingredients:
1/2 ounce coconut oil
1/2 ounce shea butter
1/2 ounce beeswax
30 drops essential oil(s) of choice
Empty lip balm tubes
Directions:
1) If you have a double boiler, get that out. Otherwise do like I do and get an old pot plus a glass jar. OR use an aluminum tin which works super great for pouring because you can pinch it and make a little spout. Fill the pot with a few inches of water and place the jar or tin in the water. Start heating the water on medium heat.
2) Measure out the first three ingredients by weight. Place them in the jar stirring occasionally and watch as the magic happens.
3) Continue to stir as the oils melt together. Adjust the heat so the water stays at a low simmer. Also keep an eye on the water level and add more if necessary.
4) Once the oils are all melted together you can remove the pan from the heat. Use a hot pad to remove the jar from the water.
5) Pour in any essential oils you may be using, give it a good mix and carefully pour the hot mixture into your empty lip balm tubes. See why the aluminum can works well? You can squish it into a spout.
6) Allow them to harden and wallah! You have homemade lip balm.

Other tips
Great essential oils to use would be peppermint, spearmint or lavender. Or any combination your little heart desires. I would suggest staying away from citrus oils like lemon or grapefruit because those oils can cause photosensitiviy.
If you would like to give your lip balm a little color you can add dried beet powder which will give it a little pinkish tint, or cocoa powder which gives it a more nude/brownish tint. Start by simply mixing in 1 teaspoon of either at a time once you've removed the hot oil from the stove.
If the consistency of the lip balm is a little too hard or too soft for your preference, then simply add a little more beeswax to firm it up, or reduce it by a little to make it softer.
