General Ideas for using hydrosols
Body & Face Spritz
One of the easiest ways to use hydrosols is to put them in a little glass spray bottle and give your face a little morning spritz. You could also use them as an all over spritzer if you wish. My favorites to spray on my face are Wild Chamomile, Lavender, or Rose. They are so soothing and yet wake my face up in the morning. This spritz can be used in place of your daily toner. If you have large pores, and not an overly dry face, you can try mixing in a little vodka which will help tighten those pores.
Face Mask
If you love to give yourself a pampering facial, you will adore adding hydrosols to your kit! In place of the water simply use the hydrosol of your choice to moisten the clay with. Easy peasy!
Hair Rinse
Another lovely thing to do with the hydrosols would be to give your hair a healthy little rinse after shampooing and conditioning. You can either pour a couple tablespoons directly onto your hair, OR mist it on with a spritzer bottle. Either way, this is a leave-in treatment so it's best to do at the end of your shower. A couple suggested hydrosols are below:
Yarrow & Rosemary combo) Itchy, flaky scalp
Cedar & Rosemary combo) Hair loss
Chamomile) Sensitive scalp
Sage & Rosemary) Excessively oil scalp
Mouth Wash
Hydrosols can make for a refreshing mouth wash in place of your regular wash. All you do is combine 1 part hydrosol to 4 parts water and swish as usual.
Beverage
Yes! You can safely drink diluted hydrosols. And they are delicious! For a tasty flavored water drink, add a small splash of hydrosol to your water. Start with a teaspoon but feel free to add more if that's not quite enough flavor. I usually end up using about 1 tablespoon per glass of water (12 ounces or so). Two of my favorites after a long day working outside are Chamomile or Rose. So refreshing.
You could get really fancy and add the hydrosol to some club soda for a little fizzy drink! Or try adding a little to some fruit juice to jazz it up even more. Have fun with it and let me know your favorite combination!
For Your Pup
It is never a good idea to use essential oils directly on pets because animals tend to have a much keener sense of smell than we do. Hydrosols, however, are MUCH milder than essential oils and can, in certain instances, be used safely around your pets.
To keep your puppy smelling fresh between baths, spritzing his or her coat with a light mist of hydrosol can do wonders to erase the stink. Simply spritz the hydrosol onto your dogs fur, avoiding the eyes, and brush through. Dogs really seem to love tree scents such as spruce, pine, etc.
Cleaning
To make cleaning a little more enjoyable, try adding a splash of hydrosol to your mop bucket for a lovely added scent. Or use it on your dust rag to wipe down windowsills.
