Lavender and Orange Salty Mermaid Hair Spritz

I suppose I am not a normal girl, because the only hair “products” I use on my hair are homemade. Honestly I don’t even own a bottle of store bought hairspray anymore! Neither do I curl, straighten, or otherwise mess with my hair much. My favorite go-to hairdo is the messy bun. So even though it’s safe to say I’m not a hair person, it definitely took me awhile to adjust to using homemade hair products.

All that to say—if you are wanting to go more natural in the hair department because of all the nasty junk in those products, I’m going to be straight with you and say this: there WILL be a learning curve to managing your hair more naturally. As I said it most definitely took some adjusting for me when I switched from using store bought hairspray to the homemade version. It will not feel the same. But I am a firm believer that less is more. So I hope you give this a fair shot. Even if it means trying it for a week or two and coming back to it awhile later. I’ve totally done that. In frustration I have thrown away batches of homemade stuff, and then a year later tried again, and surprisingly loved it the second time around. It’s a process so be gentle with yourself, and don’t beat yourself up if it takes a little getting used to.

I really truly do have confidence that once you adjust, you’ll love it. You’ll love having the power to put only good stuff in your hair, you’ll love having waaaay less waste, and you’ll love the freedom to start concocting and creating your own personalized products.

A few things before we get started

Yes. You will need a preservative

Any body care products must contain a preservative if it contains water. There is too much of a risk for mold, yeast, and bacteria to grow. The only exception is if you want to make things in very small batches and store in the fridge. They will probably be good for up to a week doing it that way. Learn more about preservatives here.

Yes. You will need to weigh the ingredients

Trust me. Your homemade body care products will be so much more consistent with less waste. If you don’t believe me, check out the YouTube video I created just for weighing out ingredients.

Yes. I realize water and oil do not mix

But trust me. Unless you want your hair to get super duper dried out, you will want the oil in there. It helps “coat” your hair so the salt won’t do as much damage. Simply shake up your bottle before spritzing.

No. Unfortunately this does not work in a fine mist spritzer bottle

I have tried many many times, even using the industrial grade ones, but it clogs up every time and comes out more as a stream. Basically, I still put mine in a spritzer bottle, but instead of spraying directly on my hair, I spray it into my hand and then comb it through my hair with my fingers. Totally works.

Yes. Please feel free to adjust the salt and/or oils to fit your hair

Just be sure that if you add or subtract something, you will always want this recipe to equal 100 grams. So if you add an extra 5 grams of salt, you will want to reduce another ingredient by 5 grams. The reason being that most preservatives must be 1 % of the total recipe. Using a 100 gram total amount makes it super easy to calculate the amount of preservative needed—generally 1%! :)

And now I bring you…sexy beach hair.

Salty Mermaid Hair Spritz

Ingredients

  • 55 grams lavender hydrosol

  • 5 grams Epsom salt

  • 10 grams Himalayan salt

  • 10 grams aloe gel

  • 3 grams glycerin

  • 10 grams argan oil

  • 5 grams jojoba oil

  • .5 gram vitamin e oil

  • 1 gram natural preservative

  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil

Directions

  1. Whisk together the hydrosol and both types of salt until the salts have dissolved. This is a little easier if the hydrosol has been brought to room temperature first, but it’s not necessary.

  2. Once the salt has dissolved you may go ahead and mix in the remaining ingredients. Although, you may wish to add your preservative to either the hydrosol mixture or to one of the oils before combining it. Certain preservatives tend to like oil or water better. Just something to pay attention to.

  3. Once you have everything mixed up as well as water and oil can be, carefully pour it into a glass bottle.

  4. To use, shake the bottle well, spritz about a dime to quarter size into your hand, and apply to damp hair. Scrunch your hair and run your fingers through it to evenly disperse. Style as normal.

That’s it! Crazy easy.

Things to note

There still is no guarantee how long this will last even with the preservative because there are other variables involved such as how sanitary your utensils were when making, etc. I’d say you’re for sure good for a month, possibly much longer! Just keep an eye on it and if it starts smelling funny get rid of it and make a new batch.

Feel free to change up the scent by using different hydrosols and essential oils. Let your imagination run wild!

If you are unable to grow your own herbs, or find ingredients locally, then here are two of my favorite places to buy bulk ingredients:

This company is where I purchase the majority of my seeds. Great selection of heirloom and/or organic seeds:

These are hands down my favorite seed starting trays and pots. These are heavy duty and don’t crumple when you pop your plants out! Definitely worth the investment in my opinion.
