Baby Butt Balm

Baby Butt Balm. Soothing healing salve for sensitive little bottoms that helps heal diaper rash.

While it feels like the entire world is out buying toilet paper I’m just over here trying to get my kid to poop. 🤣

But seriously we are dealing with a case of poop withholding—so magnesium gummies to the rescue. It makes her stool so soft she can’t hold it in, plus it minimizes any chance of hurting when it comes out.

Anyhow, I could go on about the “P” word, but I’ll spare you all the lovely details. Suffice it to say—she finally pooped! But now we have a bit of diaper rash we’re dealing with. So baby butt balm to the rescue!

When we first got these two kiddos I didn’t have time to make salve for them so I went and bought some from the store and holy cow, you guys! A tiny little jar of it was so expensive! I easily replicated the recipe which I’m sharing with you today.

You can make this balm/salve knowing that your sweet little one is only getting super healthy ingredients on their tiny little bum.

And yes, yes I do make you weigh out the ingredients. Learn why here.

Baby Butt Balm

Ingredients

  • 50 grams calendula infused olive oil

  • 30 grams coconut oil

  • 14 grams beeswax

  • 4 grams castor oil

  • 1 gram vitamin e oil

  • 1 gram lavender essential oil

Directions

  1. First things first, you will need to make a very powerful calendula infused oil. If you have not checked out my tutorial for making super potent infused oils you can check it out here. Trust me—you want to know this method. The results are insanely more potent than the traditional method of making herbal oils. Making this oil takes about 3-4 days so once it’s made, come back here to finish making the balm.

  2. Now that you have your calendula infused oil made, you will need to get your double boiler out. Otherwise you can use a pot with a couple inches of water in it and a glass jar with your ingredients placed in the pot of water.

  3. Weigh out the beeswax and coconut oil. Place them in the glass jar and melt them over medium heat. I like to get these to melt first before adding in the infused oil, just to make sure and not kill any of the healing properties in the infused oil.

  4. Once the beeswax and coconut oil have melted, drizzle in the infused oil, warming it just slightly.

  5. Remove from the heat and weight out the remaining ingredients directly into the glass jar.

  6. Mix everything together really well and then carefully pour them into glass jars or tins of your choice.

  7. Allow them to fully solidify. Label, and enjoy!

Shelf Life

A good balm/salve should last many months if stored properly. That means keep them out of extreme temperatures and out of sunlight. Also be sure and never to introduce any water into the jar as that will cause mold and bacteria to grow and you would then need to throw out the entire batch.

Benefits of the Ingredients

Calendula

Calendula is one of the most beneficial herbs for the skin due to its healing and nutritive properties. It is vulnerary (skin healing), anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is known to be soothing to the skin, rejevenating, and slightly antifungle. It’s rich in many vitamins and minerals and makes a great carrier oil for infused oil.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oils is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and a disinfectant. It’s great for sensitive skin even baby bottoms.

Beeswax

Beeswax is used to create a stable solid, but it also has moisturizing properties, acts as a protective barrier, and is an emollient.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is an anti-inflammatory and an emollient. It’s very thick and sticky which causes a barrier for moisture which can be very helpful in healing a diaper rash.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is a very soothing oil and in small amounts is considered safe for baby. It contains antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. Its antiseptic and cytophylactic properties help heal burns, bruises, wounds.

Other things to consider

If your little one is allergic to the aster family, you will most likely want to stay away from using calendula. Always do a small patch test if you are unsure.

If you wish to leave out the essential oil feel free to do so. I used a very small amount (1%) but if you are not comfortable using oils on your baby that is perfectly fine.
